Time management

It's still early in the semester and I'm already starting to feel the high demand for my upper-division PR classes: writing, publications and research. I knew this semester I would have to dedicate most of my free time working to excel in my classes. For this reason, I set aside time on Tuesdays from 1:30-5:00 to work on assignments, read, and study. My classes, internship and student assistant position are all top priority. I'm learning how to manage my time during the week and take advantage of the weekend to get things done for the following week.
This week brought plenty of bad weather which equaled no Thursday and Friday class. It is amazing how much work I accomplished for the following week. Plus, I got to relax and take in all the changes the semester has in store for me.
Monday through Wednesday, I continued to make the finishing touches on the Sandwich of the Day fliers.
IT was able to connect my laptop to the office printer making life so much easier. The little things DO make a difference.

new semester. New position!

The first week of the semester brought a world of changes: new schedule, new classes, new books and a new position as a PAID marketing and pr intern! After a semester as a junior intern, I am now officially working at a job where I'm utilizing my degree! I discovered the good news on January 22, 2010, my 22nd birthday. Applying and interviewing for a new position is always a learning experience, but fortunately I made the cut. It helped that I had the opportunity to get to know the staff and understand the department. Also, my one year milestone for working in H&F main office will be the last week in January. My work experience with H&F main office and intern office has been such a great experience due to the amazing staff!
In the intern office, I continued to work with InDesign to fix minor details on the Special Catering Fliers. I was assigned a new project for Food Services. I created a publication to inform customers of the Sandwich of the Day at Dot's Deli in Couch Restaurants. I complete the project at my office hours and during some spare time in the evenings. Lauren and Aaron both agreed it was ready to be submitted to the client. Unfortunately, the client does not always see eye to eye on the publications the department creates. Therefore, I recreated a new template that would stand out more for the deli. Aaron gave me some design advise that might be more appeal to the client. Once the new template was created, I customized 5 fliers for each sandwich of the day. It's important to be patient and satisfy the client while still using skills and techniques to reach the desired public.

Learning the Basics ( January 4, 2010 - January 15, 2010)

The Christmas break was just what I need to shift my focus away from papers, tests and quizzes. I spent most of my break working as a Student Assistant in the H&F main office. It made me realize how excited I am to finish my degree and become financially independent. During my time off, I worked on publications for Special Events Catering to get more familiar with InDesign, the main program used to create publications. It took patience and time to understand how to operate simple tasks on the complex software. I worked with Riley, senior intern and law student, to assist me with design techniques and advice. Although I bought Adobe InDesign CS4 from the IT store, it was not operating correctly on my MacBook the whole fall semester. Ryan Trevino, IT specialist, was able to diagnose the problem over the break which allowed me to finally use my laptop to create publications. For the rest of the break, I was able to spend my evenings working on projects such as the Special Event Catering fliers and, most importantly, developing publication skills and techniques.

Inside Edition

Public Relations is one major that does not get enough credit for its required hard work and dedication. Last semester, I was enrolled in my intro level classes for Public Relations and began gaining experience by interning with the Markering and PR Department for OU Housing and Food Service. My first semester with the department gave me an insider look on the tedious work that goes into each publication. I've excepeted that each skill and technique can be learned through practice and research. I started my internship wanting to know how to do EVERYTHING related to PR. However, I quickly realized I had to start somewhere; even if it was at the very beginning. InDesign was a whole new world to me and not knowing how to do the basics was frustrating. I didn't want to bug my fellow intern or supervisor with an overload of questions, but after time I realizaed the only way I was going to learn is to ask questions. Now entering the second semester of my internship, I come with a better understanding of what is expected of me. I know everything is not going to be perfect the first time. I reach out to the Markert/PR Specialist Supervisor, Lauren Royston, Assistant Supervisior, Aaron Lindley, and my fellow experienced interns for advice, InDesign lessons or even a second opinion.
